Prefazione di Matthew Slater
Una delle domande fondamentali, in filosofia della biologia, รจ quella riguardante lo status della gerarchia Linneana. Che cosa sono le specie? E i generi e gli altri taxa di livello superiore? There are really out there in the world, or are merely linguistic devices, or cognitive in the broadest sense, to help bring order to a world otherwise difficult to handle? And, if not, then when biologists say that certain species are endangered, or who were new discoveries, or that some organisms are a mixture of different species, meaning that their allegations are, and what makes them true (or false)? This paper addresses these questions, bringing the philosophy of biology more generally to the fields of ontology and metaphysics in an attempt to give a ransom to those entities transcategoriali, from platypuses to chimeras, hybrids to GMOs, that seem to undermine our traditional attempts to classify the so-called natural world.
