Over the past four decades, the notions of possibility, necessity and contingency have been the focus of a lively debate in philosophy analytical. In a large number of areas, in fact, from metaphysics to the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and moral philosophy of science, the arguments are essentially based on modal notions have been numerous.
This book aims to clarify the relation between the modal notions and tools used in their analysis, such as modal logic and the notion of "possible world". In particular, the author wishes to criticize two ideas: it is inevitable to accept the consequences metaphysical problems of modal logic "simple" and that to interpret the need for a conception of modal logic "metaphysically robust to possible world.


Vittorio Morato is a research fellow at the Department of Philosophy, University of Padua where he was also Adjunct Professor of Philosophy of Language and Philosophy of Mind. He received his PhD in "Analytic Philosophy" at the University of Bologna and studied at the Universities of California (Los Angeles), Oxford and Cambridge.
